Notts Forest BU10 Red - San Diego Open 2008 - Champions!!
August 17, 2008
The Notts Forest BU10 Red team continued its great tournament season by becoming BU10 champions of the 2008 San Diego Open Tournament on August 16-17.
They started off the tournament slowly, drawing 1-1 with La Mesa Matrix. During their second game, they played much better soccer vs the Notts Forest BU10 Black team, winning 3-0. The last game of group play, which the team won 5-2, was against the Chula Vista Rangers.
It was that same Chula Vista Rangers team that the boys would see in the championship match. The championship game was a competitive contest. During the final match, Chula Vista Rangers came out a lot more inspired and energetic than they did during their group play match vs the Notts Forest BU10 Red. However, the Notts Forest BU10 Red matched their energy, and went up 1-0 at halftime. Notts Forest could have been up 2-0 to 3-0 at halftime, but were unable to convert on some very good chances. With Chula Vista being only a goal down, they were able to find the equalizing goal 10 minutes after halftime. That goal would set the stage for how the Notts Forest BU10 Red would win the championship. About 3 minutes after the equalizing goal, Notts Forest produced a solid cross from the left flank which bounced in the box. With Chula Vista Ranger's goalkeeper putting his hands up and getting himself ready to catch the ball, the shortest player on the Notts Forest team leaped up into the air (and before the goalkeeper could catch the ball), headed the ball over the keeper and into the net. That great play proved to be the match and championship winner. Congratulations once again to the team for another good showing in a tournament.
"The game winning goal showed how my players played with heart, and with that effort, they were rewarded by winning the tournament. It was a great experience for my team to participate in this tournament. It provided a good opportunity for my team to keep their pre-season form up and give us more game experience which we can use to prepare for the upcoming Presidio League Season. Great job again boys!" said coach Marvin Tarroja
